Nature and Mountains

The Ceahlău Massif, which includes Ceahlău National Park, is located in the central group of the Eastern Carpathians. The massif is also home to the Duruitoarea Waterfall natural monument, scientific reserves, and Lake Izvorul Muntelui.

Vânători-Neamț Nature Park is designated as a protected area in IUCN Category V and primarily serves to protect the landscape and provide recreational opportunities. It covers 30,000 hectares of primeval forests and clear waters. The “Dumbrava” Oak Reserve in the Vânători-Neamț area is an ancient forest at an altitude of 450 meters, with oak trees aged between 200 and 300 years along the Ozana River. The “Codrii de Aramă” Reserve is located on Filioru Hill and is an IUCN Category IV protected area at an altitude of 550 to 650 meters, with oak trees approximately 150 years old. The “Pădurea de Argint” Reserve is an IUCN Category IV birch forest with trees more than 100 years old, at an altitude of 510 meters.

The bison reserve near Vânători-Neamț covers an area of 180 hectares with semi-free-roaming bison; bison live freely in the Chitele area. The Bison Safari Route includes ten points of interest. At each of these points, an accompanying ranger provides information about the local fauna and flora and their interrelationship with the bison.

The park’s “Școala Pădurii” educational zone includes the visitor center, the bison acclimatization enclosure, and the “Dragoș Vodă” Zoo. The visitor center of Vânători-Neamț Nature Park features an interactive exhibition completed in March 2026.

Culture and History

Neamț Monastery is considered the oldest monastery in Moldavia and was founded in the 14th century. Its main church was founded in the 15th century by Ștefan cel Mare (1457–1504); it is considered a masterpiece of Moldavian architecture and became a model for later Moldavian churches.

Neamț Fortress was built during the reign of Petru I and later fortified by Ștefan cel Mare (1457–1504) with four bastions in the outer courtyard and a bridge resting on eleven stone pillars. The permanent exhibition of the Neamț Fortress Museum comprises 21 exhibition rooms established as part of the restoration project.

The Agapia Monastery Museum displays icons from the 16th to the 18th century, old manuscripts and printed works, religious objects, embroideries, and literary materials. The main church of Agapia Monastery features interior paintings executed by Nicolae Grigorescu in 1858, when he was 20 years old. The Văratec Monastery Museum houses a collection of old ecclesiastical art, including historic church embroidery, hand-made priestly vestments with gold and silver threads, icons, sacred vessels, manuscripts, and Gospels.

The sacred cave of Saint Theodora of Sihla is located in the forested mountains of the Neamț monastery region and is now an important pilgrimage site. Secu Monastery is a monastic site with a history of almost 500 years; in 1530, the skete named after Hieroschimonk Zosima, a monk of Neamț Monastery, was founded there under his direction. The collection of Secu Monastery preserves more than 70 historic religious objects, manuscripts, and printed works.
