Discover Slimnic: Fortress, Churches and Valea
Above Slimnic, the Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic stands on a hill; its tall red-brick ruins are visible from far away. The German name of the place is “Stolzenburg” and means “proud castle”.
Culture and History
The Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic was built in several construction phases along the road between Sibiu and Mediaș. The complex contains a small Gothic chapel, the only one still available to admire there. Construction of a Gothic church was begun in the Cetatea țărănească de la Slimnic; it was most likely never completed. The south wall of the nave and the pointed-arch arcades leading to the side aisle are still recognisable. The oldest part of Slimnic Fortress is a three-storey bell tower; its ground floor contains a Gothic chapel.
The Protestant church, dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, was built in the first half of the 15th century. The Orthodox church, dedicated to the Holy Archangels, was built of stone and brick in 1831. The Greek Catholic church, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, was built between 1904 and 1910 on the site of an older stone church.
On Easter Sunday, the custom of “însoțirea de Paște” is still observed in Slimnic: after the service, members of the congregation accompany the priest from the church to the parish house. In the Slimnic commune, crosses are made from yellow Sânziene flowers for the Sânziene custom, decorated with roses and attached to the gates so that they are visible from the road.
