Mahmudia on the Sfântu-Gheorghe Arm: Nature and Culture

Mahmudia lies on the left bank of the Sfântu-Gheorghe Arm of the Danube. The Danube Delta World Heritage Site is home to more than 300 bird species and 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and wetlands. Nature observation and cultural traces appear as separate themes, found in Mahmudia at different places and at different times.

Nature

Lacul Rotund is one of the lakes around Lacul Gorgova and is rich in wildlife. Cormorants, pygmy cormorants, pelicans, herons and birds of prey can be found there, among others. Lacul Cuzmintul Mare is a breeding area for birds and is covered with water lilies. Thus, different natural features stand side by side at the named bodies of water: diverse wildlife at Lacul Rotund and a bird-used lake shaped by water lilies at Lacul Cuzmintul Mare.

Culture and History

The ruins of the Roman fortress of Salsovia lie on a promontory on the Sfântu-Gheorghe Arm of the Danube. A birdwatching point is located near these ruins. Mahmudia’s religious sites include three Old Believer Lipovan churches.

From Christmas Eve on 24 December to Epiphany on 6 January, Mahmudia observes winter customs, including Colindatul, Plugușorul, Semănatul, Sorcova, Capra and Ursul. Mahmudia is also associated with the amateur theatre festival “Salsovia”.

The Atelier de papură in Mahmudia is considered the only workshop in the Danube Delta where reed products with brand value are made. Its distinctive features include original patterns and bold colours, including the blue used in traditional Russian architecture. Alongside the churches, winter customs and theatre, this place thus points to a craft-based aspect of local culture.

Landscape

Peștera Tunel is a fossil cave with a single, 19.20-metre-long passage on the right bank of the Sfântu-Gheorghe Arm near the landing stage. This makes it possible to consider open waters, riverside areas and the enclosed space of the cave separately when classifying the landscape.

Activities

A birdwatching excursion into the Danube Delta is offered from Mahmudia. In Mahmudia, mountain bikes are available for hire for adults and children to explore unpaved roads and paths in the surrounding area. The two offers have different focuses: one connects Mahmudia with the Danube Delta, while the other connects it with roads and paths in the immediate surroundings of the village.

The offers mentioned differ not only in terms of the activity, but also in their connection to the area: the birdwatching excursion leads from Mahmudia into the Danube Delta, while the mountain bike hire refers to unpaved roads and paths in the surrounding area. For personal planning, these two focuses can be classified separately alongside the fixed references to the location: Salsovia and the churches belong to culture, while the lakes and the fossil cave belong to the landscape. This keeps it visible whether the focus of the day is on wildlife observation, exercise, history or natural features; the geographical orientation of the offers also remains distinguishable.
