Sulina: Lighthouses, Riverside Promenade and Danube Delta

Sulina can only be reached by water via the Danube or the Black Sea; Tulcea is suggested as the port of departure.

Culture and History

Four lighthouses are located in Sulina and its immediate surroundings. The Old Lighthouse of Sulina was built by the Ottoman authorities at the beginning of the 19th century. The New Lighthouse of Sulina stands at the seaward end of the right Sulina embankment.

The CED Palace is located at the entrance to Sulina’s riverside promenade. The building was constructed in 1866 in the Neoclassical style; it housed the offices of the European Commission of the Danube, the shipping company and the harbour master’s office.

The Delta Cathedral in Sulina is dedicated to Saint Alexander and Saint Nicholas. King Carol I donated it, and it was completed in 1982.

The maritime cemetery on the outskirts of Sulina comprises a Christian, a Muslim and a Jewish cemetery. Sulina’s multi-faith cemetery was founded in 1864 and administered by the European Commission of the Danube.

Riverside, Beach and Delta

Sulina’s approximately 5 km-long riverside promenade offers a rustic landscape. Along the riverside promenade, visitors can see city ruins as well as passing boats and cargo ships.

In the immediate vicinity of Sulina lies the mouth of the Danube, known as Kilometer 0, on the Sulina branch directly opposite the city.

Sulina Beach is 2 km from the city. It is ecologically significant because the protected sea bindweed, which is listed on the Red List, grows there.

A strictly protected area lies nearby between the Sulina and Chilia branches. During boat trips on the channels and lakes of the Danube Delta, it can only be viewed from a distance.

On the Water

Local visitor transport in Sulina includes boat traffic, public transport, taxis and bicycle rental along the riverside promenade.

An overnight stay permit is provided for tourists on the Sulina Canal who engage in a low-speed activity on the water.

A guided kayak tour through the Danube Delta is offered from Sulina. A guided kayak route passes the North Lighthouse through a channel into Musura Bay, where birds can be observed.

By Bicycle

A bicycle tour runs along Canal 4 and Sulina’s riverside promenade.

From Sulina, you can cycle to Letea and continue on to Periprava. Between Letea and Periprava, there is a section where the bicycle must sometimes be pushed.
