Bălteni: Natural Area and Parish Church

The Bălteni forest and botanical reserve is located in the Bârlad floodplain; locals know this area as Dumbrava Bălteni. The Bălteni reserve covers 18.8 hectares and is a nature reserve of national importance in IUCN Category IV.

The protection and conservation programme for the Pădurea Bălteni nature reserve includes two mammal species: the European hamster and the European ground squirrel. In the ROSCI0158 Pădurea Bălteni–Hârboanca area, the designation refers to habitat type 91Y0, Dacian oak-hornbeam forests. This habitat covers 100 % of the area and at the same time accounts for more than 15 % of its national occurrence. When visiting designated protected areas, applicable route and conduct guidelines should be observed. For nature walks, it is also advisable to check current trail conditions before setting out.

A designated tourist route leads from Vaslui via Zăpodeni, Bălteni, Brăhăşoaia, Rebricea, Rafaila, Cozmeşti and Deleşti back to Vaslui. Along this route, Bălteni lies between Zăpodeni and Brăhăşoaia, while Vaslui is both the starting point and the endpoint. For a longer route, it is sensible to check the complete itinerary and current route conditions before departure. This makes it possible to adapt the hiking plans to the route actually intended, without adding extra intermediate destinations.

Bălteni is first mentioned in writing in a document issued on 15 October 1491 during the reign of Ștefan cel Mare. On the first rise at the beginning of Dealul Siliştea near Bălteni, there is a feudal settlement site dating from the 15th to the 17th century. To prepare for a visit to historic sites, current opening hours and local information can be checked before the journey. This makes it easier to coordinate historical walks with other planned activities.

The parish church of Bălteni is dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God and Saint Hierarch Nicholas. Its construction began on 25 September 1844; it was consecrated on 6 December 1847. The present parish church is considered the third church in the history of the community. In the earthquake of 10 November 1940, the parish church split into four parts; the tower and bells collapsed, although none of the bells was damaged. When visiting churches, possible opening hours and current visitor information should be checked in advance. This also applies if the visit is to be combined with a tour of other historic sites.

Bălteni Hm. is a secondary railway halt serving Bălteni on Railway Line 600. Timetables for a secondary railway halt should be checked before the journey. This makes it easier to coordinate a train journey with a hike or a visit to historic sites, without assuming a specific connection.
