Lepșa: Tișița Gorge, Mountain Trails and Monastery

The traditional gorge-like section of the Cheile Tișiței protected area runs from “Gura Tișiței”, the confluence of the Tișița and Putna rivers, to the “Tunelul Mare”; it is approximately 7 kilometres long, has an elevation difference of 200 metres, and takes 5–6 hours to walk there and back.

Trails and Landscape

Golul Lepșei is an alpine meadow landscape. It can be reached via the DN 2D and then along a gravel and forest road. From Golul Lepșei, an approximately 10-kilometre hiking trail leads in around 3 hours to the point “La Trei Hotare”, where the borders of the counties of Bacău, Covasna and Vrancea meet.

Hiking trail no. 2 leads from Lepșa at an elevation of 610 metres via Valea Tișiței, Pârâul Cristianu Mic and Golul Roibului at 1,460 metres to Șaua Geamăna at 1,496 metres. It is marked with a red triangle, is approximately 13 kilometres long and takes 8–9 hours.

Nature

Cascada Putnei (Săritoarea Putnei) is a protected area of national interest near the village of Lepșa, in the administrative territory of the commune of Comuna Tulnici in Vrancea County. It corresponds to IUCN Category IV and is a geological and landscape nature reserve. In 1973, Cascada Putnei was declared a natural monument. Cascada Putnei is approximately 80 metres long; the water collects in a lake approximately 12 metres deep.

The Piatra Ciuta peak, the Tisaru Mic peak, Tişarul Mare Mountain and the Locoțeilor peak are located in the vicinity of Lepșa. The various landscape forms—from alpine meadows and mountain trails to the nature reserve—can be considered separately when planning.

Culture

The Mănăstirea Lepșa Monastery is located on the banks of the Putna River in the Vrancea Mountains and in the vicinity of Lepșa. It was founded in 1789 by the local răzeși, meaning free peasants. The monastery’s wooden church, “Naşterea Maicii Domnului”, is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary and is a historic monument.

The “Sfânta Treime” chapel at Mănăstirea Lepșa Monastery is dedicated to the Holy Trinity and was built in 1993. The Biserica Ortodoxă Greşu, Biserica Ortodoxă Dragosloveni and Biserica Ortodoxă Coza are also located in the vicinity of Lepșa; all three are Orthodox churches.
