Discover Mali Zvornik

The documented highlights of Mali Zvornik include the underground city of Karađorđević, the Orlovine archaeological site, the rock church Crkva Časnog krsta – Mali Ostrog and Lake Zvornik. The lake stretches 25 kilometres upstream from the 45-metre-high dam at Zvornik and Mali Zvornik.

The underground city of Karađorđević is located in the rock in the centre of Mali Zvornik, near the bridge of King Alexander I Karađorđević. It was built in the 1930s as a secret military command centre for King Alexander in the event of war. The complex therefore represents not only underground architecture but also a clearly defined period in the town’s history.

Its documented dimensions are important for understanding the complex: it comprises around 75 rooms and approximately 1.5 kilometres of passageways.

The Orlovine archaeological site contains the remains of fortifications from the Early Byzantine period and the early Middle Ages. The remains of the structures there are described as being approximately 1,400 and 1,000 years old, respectively.

Another perspective is offered by the local-history museum collection and exhibition “Vizantijski koreni Malog Zvornika”, which opened in the gallery of the “17. septembar” Library. Artefacts from the Orlovine archaeological site are intended to be stored and displayed there. Parts of the legacy of King Alexander I Karađorđević, preserved in the cultural and historical complex of the underground city of Karađorđević, are also to be shown. In this way, Orlovine and the underground complex are linked through the planned or intended collection, without this implying a joint visitor route.

The “Crkva Časnog krsta – Mali Ostrog” is a rock church carved into a cave in Mali Zvornik. Its floor plan is cross-shaped; the church is 33 metres long, wide and high. The unusual combination of a cave space and a clear geometric design makes it an independent cultural attraction alongside the underground city and the archaeological sites.

Kayaking is possible on Lake Zvornik. The lake is also the venue for several events of different kinds. The 19th “Plivanje za Bogojavljenski krst” is a traditional religious and sporting event on Lake Zvornik near the hydroelectric power plant in Mali Zvornik.

For 2026, the 22nd “Zlatni kotlić” competition for preparing fish soup was scheduled to take place at the beach in Sakara. Also scheduled for 2026, as part of the traditional “Drina je smisao života” event from 23 to 25 July, was the 15th lake regatta.
