Pirot District between Gorges, Culture and Specialties

The Rosomačka Gorge is part of the Jerma Strict Nature Reserve, which is classified in the first protection category. Cascades, waterfalls and plunge pools in the Rosomačka Gorge were formed by vertical river erosion. The Vetrena dupka Cave is located in the Jerma protected area near Vlasi; it is 4,150 metres long. Stara Planina is a state-protected nature park in the first protection category and is home to endemic plant and animal species.

The marked trail to the Koziji Kamen viewpoint is 3.5 kilometres long and takes about three hours on foot. From the Koziji Kamen viewpoint, you can see the entire length of Lake Zavoj and the Stara Planina massif. The Zavoj Reservoir was formed in 1963 after a landslide dammed the Visočica River; a dam was later built at the Zavoj Reservoir. The Planinarski dom 12 km complex has a ski slope with a lift and artificial snowmaking.

The Guševica spring in the Tijabara district is considered one of the landmarks of Pirot and has been designated a protected site. The Nišava River divides Pirot into the old Tijabara district and the new Pazar district. Pirot Fortress – Momčilov Grad – is a medieval fortress dating from the 14th century; it once guarded the Nišava Valley and the route to the east. The Begov most Bridge was built in the 17th century, has retained its authentic appearance to this day and is protected as a cultural monument. The cave church of St. Peter and Paul near Rsovci was created in the 13th century and contains the distinctive fresco “Isus Mladenac”.

The Museum of Ponišavlje is housed in the Hristić family home and presents ethnographic, historical and artistic collections that bear witness to the life, customs and identity of Pirot and Ponišavlje. The museum also preserves an extensive collection of carpets and ceramics, as well as a reconstructed 19th-century bourgeois interior. Pirot carpet weaving is associated with Serbia’s national list of intangible cultural heritage; inclusion on the UNESCO list is being pursued. Pirot was a centre of pottery-making in Serbia and had 40 pottery workshops in the mid-19th century.

The product Pirotska peglana kobasica is associated with the Register of Designations of Origin; it was entered in 2022. Pirotski Kačkavalj was originally made exclusively from sheep’s milk from Stara Planina. The oldest written records of its production on Stara Planina date from the early 18th century. The Stara Planina Dishes Festival in Temska offers tastings of traditional mountain dishes, including cheese and dairy products, lamb, pies and mushrooms.

The Pirot Tourist Organisation organises excursions, guided city tours and scheduled visits to cultural and historical sites. The Pirot–Rsovci–Visočka Ržana–Vrelo–Dojkinci–Pirot programme is associated with a two-day bus tour. The Pirot–Sukovo–Poganovo–Pirot programme is associated with a three-day bus tour. The Pirot–Topli Do–Pilj Waterfall excursion is associated with a one-day programme that includes transport, lunch and a visit to the waterfall.
