Novi Pazar – Culture, Architectural History and Regional Cuisine

A prominent landmark is the Petrova Church in the northeast of Novi Pazar, above the right bank of the Deževska near its confluence with the Raška. The Altun-Alem Mosque dates from the 16th century. The Isa-Beg Hammam was first mentioned in writing in 1489.

The Isa-Beg Hammam is divided into a men’s and a women’s section as a double hammam. It was commissioned by Isa-beg Ishaković in the second half of the 15th century. In the center of Novi Pazar also stands the Amir-Agin Han, which probably dates from the 17th century.

The Petrova Church is the oldest surviving medieval church in Serbia. However, its significance is not limited to the surviving building. During an examination of its foundations, a rich hoard of objects from the early 5th century BC was discovered in 1957.
