Key facts about Bajina Bašta
The town center of Bajina Bašta was already laid out in 1882 so that all streets intersected at right angles in the town center. The Drina runs along the northwestern and northern sides of the municipality for a length of 60 kilometers and is the most important river along its municipal boundary. A beach on the Drina is located directly next to the bridge leading to Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In the center of Bajina Bašta lies Park ćirilice. It is the first theme park in the region dedicated to the Serbian script. Thus, in addition to the town's 1882 urban structure, the town center also offers a clear cultural focal point for a walk through the town.
Which cultural and natural attractions are located in the surrounding area?
Rača Monastery is located six kilometers from Bajina Bašta and is considered to have been founded by King Dragutin Nemanjić in the 13th century. From the monastery, the easy, two-kilometer-long educational trail “Račana” leads through the surrounding area to the waterfalls of the Lađevac thermal spring. The trail runs through beech forest along the river and begins at the monastery near the nearby archaeological sites.
The educational trail thus combines a historical starting point with a short route through forest and river landscapes. The House on the Drina is also one of the best-known landmarks of Bajina Bašta and the Podrinje region; its distinctive name is explained in more detail in the FAQ.
What opportunities are available on the water and by bicycle?
The Drina is not only a defining landscape feature. The Tara–Drina Tourist Organization has several large boats that visitors can use to travel down the Drina. The boats are operated by experienced kayakers. Kayaking is also offered on Zovinsko jezero on Mount Tara and on Lake Perućac; trips on the Drina are also possible.
For cycling travelers, there are currently three developed and marked cycling routes in the Tara Mountains. The marked cycling connections run along existing forest and public roads and can also be used as hiking trails. For the 5th edition of the “Ćirilična biciklijada,” announced for August 30, 2026, a 13-kilometer circular route between Park ćirilice, Rača Monastery and the Muzej ćirilice was also planned, with 6.5 kilometers in each direction.
Which events shape the travel year?
The Drina Regatta is considered the oldest tourist and recreational event on the Drina. Tribalion has a distinctly more athletic character: Serbia's first obstacle race covers almost 20 kilometers of the most difficult mountain terrain and includes 35 challenging obstacles through mud, water and dust. Both events represent very different ways of experiencing the landscape around Bajina Bašta.
