Which historical churches and traditions are important?
The parish’s history dates back to 1795, when the Catholic parish began operating independently. Its first parish church was dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua. A second wooden church was built from 1800 to 1802. The new Church of Saint Anthony of Padua is also part of the town’s history: it was built in 1972, with its completion dated to 1973.
The Temple of the Ascension is located at 64 Vojvode Mišića Street and has been under construction since 1992. If you are planning a visit, check accessibility in advance. Another religious tradition is the celebration in June in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. It is a pilgrimage day, also attended by pilgrims from other places.
What do the archaeological sites reveal?
“Tiganj” lies southeast of Nikinci on a small rise and covers 1,000 m². The surface finds there date from the Roman period. “Grob cigla” is a Late Antique necropolis covering an area of 7,500 m². This makes the stated area of Grob cigla seven and a half times that of Tiganj; the sites also represent different historical periods.
Other sites add further locations and finds to this picture. The Živolić archaeological site lies on the southern shore of the Vranj marshland. Swords, a skull and about twenty skeletons were found at the “Ovsiste” site. The approximate number of skeletons remains an estimate. Taken together, these findings offer different ways to explore cultural history: through location, historical period and specifically named finds.
What role does the Gastro Fest play?
More than ten teams competed in a goulash-cooking contest at the second “Gastro Fest.” The event took place on September 13 in the courtyard of the parish of Saint Anthony of Padua and was organized by the HKD “Dr. Nikola Dogan” from Hrtkovci. Alongside the church and archaeological themes, the cooking contest offers a specific connection to local food culture. If a festival is important for your travel dates, check the dates in advance.
What should you keep in mind if you might travel by train?
In April 2025, Nikinci railway station on the Šabac–Ruma line was in operation. This describes the situation at that time and does not guarantee that trains run today. If you are planning a train journey, check current passenger services in advance. This lets you account for the time between the reported operational status and your own trip when planning your travel.
