Bratislava between the Danube and the Carpathian Hills

Bratislava lies between the Danube and the Carpathian Hills. In the Slovak capital, historic buildings, museums, river landscapes, viewpoints and regional specialties come together to offer very different discoveries.

Culture and history

Bratislava Castle is home to the Historical Museum of the Slovak National Museum. It has a step-free side entrance and an accessible toilet. The castle can be reached by car and public transportation; from the city center, it takes about 15 minutes to walk there.

Ancient Gerulata is a Roman UNESCO monument in the area of Rusovce. Since 2022, it has housed the permanent exhibition “Gerulata on the Borders of the Roman Empire.” The site can be reached from the city center by buses 90, 91 and 191, as well as by bicycle via the embankment leading from the city center. In the basement, evidence of Celtic settlement and an oppidum from the 1st century can be seen. The basement also contains finds demonstrating the immediate proximity of a mint.

The Museum of the Culture of Hungarians in Slovakia is a specialized museum of the Slovak National Museum with nationwide jurisdiction and is dedicated to the history and culture of Hungarians in Slovakia. It is located in the restored Brämer Curia at 18 Žižkova Street in Bratislava.

The Old Town Hall houses a permanent exhibition. The building complex showcases a unique architectural development of the buildings from the 14th to the 20th century and offers a unique view of Bratislava’s historic city center. The clock exhibition is located in the building known as the House of the Good Shepherd.

The tower of Michael’s Gate houses an exhibition of the Bratislava City Museum about weapons and the city’s fortifications. The upper terrace of the 51-meter-high Michael’s Gate offers a view of the castle and the Old Town.

River landscapes and special places

Devín Castle stands on a massive rocky hill above the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. Vaulted rooms in the castle palace are used for exhibitions by the Bratislava City Museum. During the tourist season, demonstrations of historical fencing take place there; visitors can also try spear and axe throwing as well as archery.

The area on the left bank of the Danube in Bratislava between the historic center and the left bank of the Danube is suitable for walks, museum or gallery visits, and refreshments by the river. The Danubius harbor, which has existed since 1965, is used for sightseeing cruises on the Danube. The Cyril and Methodius Route through Slovakia begins directly in Bratislava, at Devín.

The observation deck on the roof of the UFO attraction offers visibility of up to 100 kilometers. The UFO Restaurant is located at a height of 85 meters at the top of the pylon of the Most SNP Bridge. Different heights, viewpoints and activities can therefore be compared according to personal interests and available time.
