The seasonal Sysľovské polia educational trail is a defining destination in Jarovce. It is open to pedestrians and cyclists every year from 1 July to 30 September. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the educational trail. Its purpose combines recreation and education, bringing nature and learning together directly here.
Nature
Sysľovské polia is also particularly important for the protection of rare birds. The area is the last regular breeding ground of the Great Bustard in Slovakia; up to 10 females breed there. As a bird protection area, Sysľovské polia comprises species-rich secondary steppe communities on the loess and alluvial soils of the Danube. The different soil types and open vegetation are therefore just as much a part of the character of this natural area as its importance as a breeding ground.
Culture and History
Jarovce’s built heritage includes the Church of St. Nicholas, which is protected as an immovable national cultural monument. Among some of Jarovce’s residents, the Croatian language and ethnic identity have survived to the present day. The tamburica is regarded in Jarovce as an important cultural symbol and reflects this distinctive cultural heritage.
The medieval ossuary of Jarovce is located in the cemetery. It is an underground, circular stone structure. The ossuary served for the respectful storage of human bones, which were covered with earth; it no longer served this purpose in the 15th and 16th centuries.
Another historical landmark is Jarovská bažantnica. It was almost completely surrounded by a meander of a branch of the Danube, crossed by a two-arched stone bridge. The Baroque Jarovská bažantnica is protected primarily because of its valuable historic landscaping. Bažantnica v Jarovciach is also not open to the public; being there outside marked hiking or educational trails is prohibited.
Water and Traditions
Lake Veľký ZemnÃk is used by rowers and sprint canoeists. Jarovecké rameno in Jarovce offers opportunities for recreation. The local annual calendar also includes a carnival procession held in Jarovce every year. Water-based activities and a recurring tradition thus complement the area’s natural and cultural sites.
Cycling Route
Jarovce is also located on a cross-border cycling route. On the Slovak side, the EuroVelo 13 cycling route follows the former signal line of the border guards. At the Jarovce–Kittsee border crossing, it is possible to travel between Slovakia and Austria.
