Pozba: Pilgrimage, Culture and Landscape

Pozba combines a varied landscape with remarkable evidence of local and cultural history. This includes the Studnička Pozba pilgrimage site, a Reformed church dating from 1785, a railway station building preserved in an almost original condition, and traces of human settlement from the Neolithic period. A protected tree, a Jewish cemetery and a war memorial are also among Pozba’s defining places.

Landscape

The protected tree Tankošký cer is a 400-year-old Turkey oak (Quercus cerris). It is protected because of its scientific and cultural significance. The relief of Pozba is predominantly characterised by moderately to moderately strongly dissected lowland hills. Their elevations range from 156 to 253 metres, giving the landscape a clearly recognisable geographical structure.

Remembrance and Local History

A monument to the victims of the First and Second World Wars, erected in 1994, stands in the square in Pozba. The war memorial bears the engraved names of nine victims of the First World War and 22 fallen soldiers of the Second World War. Another historic site is the preserved Jewish cemetery with its marble gravestones.

Culture

The Studnička Pozba pilgrimage site is dedicated to the Seven Sorrows of Mary. The chapel above the spring was built in 1926 from donations by pilgrims. Above the spring there is a Calvary with 15 images of the Stations of the Cross attached to the trees. The complex also includes a Lourdes grotto with a statue of Our Lady of Lourdes.

Studnička Pozba lies in the triangle between the municipalities of Pozba, Bardoňovo and Dedinka. From May until the end of October, Holy Mass is regularly celebrated there every Sunday at 11:00 a.m. Opposite the chapel at Studnička Pozba stands a second chapel, built in 1914.

Archaeology and Architectural History

Archaeological finds from the area of Pozba attest to a Neolithic settlement of the Lengyel culture. Further finds attest to an Eneolithic settlement with channelled pottery. The settlement traces documented in Pozba therefore extend back to different prehistoric periods, distinguished from one another by their respective find characteristics.

The more recent architectural history is also visible in the townscape. The single-storey, rectangular railway station building in Pozba has been preserved to this day in an almost original condition. The Reformed church in Pozba is considered the oldest monument in the municipality. It was built in 1785 in the Tolerationist Classicist style.

The regional range of activities includes the blue-marked cycle touring loop route 2102 „Veľký okruh mikroregiónu Termál“. The moderately difficult SPORT MTB route is 55.7 kilometres long.
