Humenné: Culture, History and Hotels

Humenné combines cultural and historical attractions with a cycling route, historic buildings and Mieru Park.

Culture

The Humenné Open-Air Museum contains 15 wooden structures. The oldest is the wooden Eastern Christian Church of St. Michael the Archangel from Nová Sedlica. The open-air museum is located behind the castle in the park, covers an area of 4 hectares and houses an exhibition of folk architecture and domestic culture.

Another historic attraction is the Church of All Saints. It is a Gothic building from the 15th century, was formerly a Franciscan monastery and is now a Roman Catholic parish church. Its current function and former use therefore belong to the same visible architectural history, while its Gothic origins in the 15th century represent a separate historical layer.

The Vihorlatské Museum complements these themes with an art history exhibition. In the historic rooms of a Renaissance manor house, it presents the domestic culture of the nobility from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Since 2009, the museum has also offered a permanent religious art exhibition with the Chapel of the Virgin Mary in the manor house's original rooms in Humenné. Renaissance architecture, aristocratic domestic culture and religious art are therefore presented there in different exhibition areas.

Things to Do

The 52-kilometre cycling route “In the Footsteps of the Good Soldier Švejk” begins at the Laborecké Saddle near Palota and ends at Humenné railway station by the statue of the Good Soldier Švejk. Its historical connection is created by the railway line that the route follows: during the First World War, frontline troops travelled along it, and it is also associated with Jaroslav Hašek's novel. Along the route, travellers can see numerous military cemeteries and wooden churches. Its length, starting and ending points, as well as these historical and architectural stops, form part of its clearly defined character.

Nature

Mieru Park in Humenné is a national cultural monument with rare trees. It includes a ginkgo listed in the catalogue of protected trees. The park therefore represents both a protected historic site and botanical features that go beyond ordinary tree cover.
