Špačince: Hotels, Church and Local History

Špačince is located in the northern part of the Trnava Hills. The town is connected to the higher-level road network by Route II/560 Trnava–Dolné Dubové–Dechtice. The history of Špačince includes archaeological finds from various periods: archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, dating to around 7000 BC, were discovered in the “Peňažité” field section, and a silver coin from the period of the Roman Empire was also found in Špačince. In 1699, Špačince was granted town privileges and the right to hold annual fairs.

Culture

The Roman Catholic church in Špačince is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was originally Gothic and was built in 1312. Part of the church’s original presbytery has been preserved as the Chapel of the Virgin Mary. When the old church was demolished in spring 1939, the tower, sanctuary and Chapel of Saint Anne were preserved at the request of the heritage authority.

Another historical landmark is the Calvary located next to the cemetery. It dates from 1797 and features a Baroque cross. Fourteen Stations were erected at the Calvary in 1873; images were painted in the Stations in 1930. The statue of Christ the King stands on the road to Trnava. It dates from 1678 and is protected by the heritage authority.

A local event has also been recorded: the Špačinský jarmok, scheduled for Saturday, 16 August, at the local amphitheater, was to feature folklore and a varied cultural programme.

Nature

The protected Špačinsko–nižnianske polia bird sanctuary covers part of the cadastral area of Špačince. Among other reasons, the area was designated to ensure conditions for the survival and reproduction of the saker falcon. The Krupanský stream also flows through Špačince.

Hiking and Cycling

Since 1985, the local tourist association has organized the long-distance hiking march Pochod ŠPCH – Špačinskí pekní chlapci. The Pochod ŠPCH has taken place annually since its first edition. Cyclists have also participated since 1992. They may follow their own route, but must pass through all the checkpoints like the hikers.
