The village of Špačince lies in the northern part of the Trnava Hills, in a flat, broad valley of the Krupanský potok stream. The protected Špačinsko-nižnianské polia Special Protection Area extends through the cadastral territory of Špačince and serves, among other purposes, to protect the habitats of the saker falcon.

Culture and history

The Roman Catholic Church in Špačince is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was originally Gothic and was built in 1312; its feast day is 8 September. The local sacred landscape also includes a Calvary complex dating from 1797 with a Baroque cross. Fourteen Stations of the Cross were erected there in 1873.

The cemetery in Špačince contains a statue of the Holy Trinity dating from 1717 and a statue of Saint Vendelin dating from 1807. The statue of Christ the King, dating from 1678, stands on the road to Trnava. It was created by Pavol Orban, brought from Lišov in the Krupina District, has survived to this day, and is protected by the Monuments Board.

The curia at 270 Kaštieľska Street is a Neoclassical, single-storey building from the first half of the 19th century. The old Jewish cemetery in Špačince contains a chapel with the Schwertner family crypt and a complete enclosure. Archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, dating to around 7000 BC, have also been discovered in the Špačince area; a silver coin from the time of the Roman Empire was also found there. Špačince received town privileges and the right to hold markets in 1699.

At the Špačince hody, held on the Sunday after the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary on 8 September, roast goose is one of the traditional dishes.

Nature and landscape

Hlohovský zámok, Kaštieľ Chtelnica, Kaštieľ Trstín, and Smolenický zámok are located in the vicinity of Špačince; all four are châteaux. Šarkán is a mountain near Špačince, as is Šanec. In the wider regional surroundings of Špačince are the Hlboča waterfall and Driny Cave.

Experiences and events

The Chotárom Špačiniec educational trail provides information on five panels about the history and present of Špačince, archaeology and monuments, wildlife, plant life, and local features. The Špačince playground has a sandbox as well as numerous safe play elements, climbing structures, and slides. It is located in the immediate vicinity of the cultural centre; the Krupský potok stream flows past one side.

The Špačinský trojuholník run has taken place every summer without interruption since 1978. A cycle route is being built in the cadastral territory of Špačince as part of the project “Cyklistické prepojenie obcí Trnava – Bohdanovce nad Trnavou – Špačince – I. etapa”.
