Hotel in Štefanov: Church, Chapels and Historic Crosses
Štefanov lies at the transition between the Chvojnická pahorkatina and the Borská nížina. The Štefanovský potok stream flows through the village, while the southern part of Štefanov lies in the floodplain of the Myjava River. The cadastral area is used predominantly for agriculture and is partly covered by acacia woodland. Thus, the village landscape includes different types of terrain as well as numerous religious and memorial-cultural landmarks.
Culture
The Roman Catholic Church of St. Catherine of Alexandria stands in the village. The Neo-Gothic building was erected in 1937 on the site of an older church dating from 1561. Inside, it has three naves, a polygonal presbytery termination and a projecting tower. In the vicinity of Štefanov, near the settlement of U Hríchu, there is also an “Ecce Homo” statue created and erected around 1690. It has been restored and is accessible.
In Záhorie, Štefanov is one of the places with a long-standing Carnival tradition. Outside the built-up area stands the Chapel of the Seven Sorrows of the Virgin Mary, which was built in 1882. It contains a Pietà statue; the chapel was restored in 2013. The cemetery contains a Pseudo-Classical stone representation of Calvary from 1921. This stone representation is attributed to the A. LOOS company from Brno.
Further landmarks stand at prominent points in the village and its surroundings. In front of the church there is a pillar cross from 1879 featuring folk depictions of Christ and the Virgin Mary. At the former settlement of the Horných (Juračkových) Mill on the road to Senica stands a stone cross from 1905. It was erected by Jakub Klena and his wife Mária. The statue of St. John of Nepomuk in Štefanov was donated in 1788 by the miller Andrej Klena.
The Chapel of St. Florian was built in 1921 in front of the fire station. After repairs, its lantern was opened and a statue of St. Florian was placed inside. In the park in the centre of Štefanov, near the school, there is a monument to Red Army soldiers who died during the liberation in the cadastral area of Štefanov. The monument was erected in 1945 above a common soldiers’ grave.
Nature
The geographical location between the Chvojnická pahorkatina and the Borská nížina, the Štefanovský potok stream flowing through Štefanov and the Myjava floodplain in the south are among the village’s different spatial characteristics. Agricultural land predominates in the cadastral area, supplemented by areas of acacia woodland.
