Trstín – Hotels and Culture at the Foot of the Little Carpathians

Trstín lies at the eastern foot of the Little Carpathians and developed along a historic trade route through the mountains from Bohemia to Hungary. The village therefore brings together sacred buildings, historic manor houses and distinctive landscape features.

Nature and Landscape

The Vodná priepasť is located directly in the Trstín quarry. An underground lake 10 metres long and 3 metres deep fills the bottom of the entrance fissure. The entrance to the Vodná priepasť was fitted with bars and filled in during later quarrying work.

Traces of the former English park of the Baroque chateau have also been preserved: several plane trees, birches and maple trees still stand at this historic site. The Baroque chateau in Trstín itself was built in the mid-18th century.

Culture and History

The parish church of St Peter and Paul in Trstín was built in the mid-18th century. It houses a crypt of the Pongrác and Motešický families; they are regarded as patrons of the church. In addition to its architectural history, the church thus preserves the memory of two families connected with it.

The Renaissance manor house in Trstín was a fortified noble residence that served both economic and defensive functions. The building is attributed to the Motešický family. A cartouche on the chimney dates the construction of the Renaissance manor house to 5 August 1685 and its reconstruction to 15 August 1792.

The village’s historic inventory also includes an Orenstein and Koppel 7260/1915 steam locomotive. This vehicle is located in Trstín; it was initially used on construction railways and later also by sugar factories.

Sacred Sites

The Trstínska kalvária lies northeast of Trstín at the foot of the Little Carpathians. It is one of the few Calvary complexes in Slovakia built between the two world wars. Its fourteen Stations of the Cross consist of stelae with reliefs and are arranged in a circle around a six-part Crucifixion group.

The pilgrimage site of Hájiček includes the brick Church of the Seven Sorrows of Mary. It was built around the middle of the 13th century. Every year at Hájiček, a pilgrimage to the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary takes place on the Sunday around 15 August.

The Ambroziánum memorial room is open to the public. The keys are available at the municipal office of Trstín or at the parish office.
