Veľká Mača is located in the Danubian Lowland. To the south of the village lies an oak grove. At the same time, Veľká Mača is situated on the main road connecting Sereď and Sládkovičovo. The village therefore brings together landscapes, local history and a range of preserved religious and commemorative cultural landmarks.

Culture

The Veľká Mača Museum is located near the municipal office and is an important branch of the Museum of Regional Studies in Galanta. The main focus is on archaeological artefacts relating to the settlement development of Veľká Mača and the wider surrounding area. The finds from Mačianske vŕšky range from the Mesolithic to the Middle Ages, thus spanning several historical periods. A separate museum section is dedicated to the more recent history of the municipality in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The Veľká Mača Museum also includes an ethnographic and natural history section. It contains objects from Veľká Mača and the surrounding area. The various collections therefore combine archaeological finds with exhibits on the history of the municipality, as well as ethnographic and natural history objects from the village and its surroundings.

History

The Roman Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in Veľká Mača was built in 1783 in the Classical style with Baroque elements. It preserves an original medieval stone baptismal font. The Classical main altar dates from the second half of the 18th century and bears an image of St. John the Baptist. A church also contains an altar at which Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass during his first visit to Slovakia in 1990.

Religious Sites

Next to the Roman Catholic Church in Veľká Mača stands a Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk dating from 1732. In the village centre is the Holy Trinity sculptural group, located on the site where the old church once stood. The Holy Family sculptural group was erected in 1867 at the instigation of Anton Miklós.

Veľká Mača also has the Lourdes Grotto, “Lurdská jaskyňa”; the year 1991 is indicated for it. The sites mentioned preserve different forms of religious expression: a church with a medieval baptismal font and Classical main altar, Baroque and later sculptural groups, and the Lourdes Grotto with its stated year.

The Deportation Memorial in Veľká Mača commemorates the resettlement and deportation of the population in 1947.
