Mengeš: St. Michael's Church, Gobavica and Cycling Routes

St. Michael's Church, known in German as the Church of St. Michael, features a baptismal font designed by Jože Plečnik and is considered worth visiting. The present-day chancel was built in the mid-15th century in the Gothic style. The frescoes in the presbytery date from around 1460 and are attributed to the workshop of Janez Ljubljanski. The area around Mengeš also contains archaeological finds from prehistoric, Roman and Slavic periods.

The Mestni muzej Mengeš preserves archaeological and ethnological collections and has a collection of musical instruments. Cultural traces associated with the town can also be found outside the museum: musical instruments made in small workshops in Mengeš are particularly well known today.

There are numerous hiking trails around Mengeš. For the hike to Rašica, the Stane Kosec summit, starting at the Mengeška koča on Gobavica is recommended. The hike from the Mengeška koča to Rašica connects two mountain huts, runs entirely through the forest and has no exposed sections.

In good weather, the viewing platform on the tower at Rašica offers views of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps, the Karawanks, the Julian Alps and the lower hills around Ljubljana. The Mengeška koča can be reached from Ljubljana by bus to the Mengeš Pavovec stop; from there, follow the signs to the hut either along the road or via the fitness trail.

Below the hill, there is a signposted, paved car park. From there, access to the Mengeška koča is via either a fitness trail or a steeper forest path. At the Mengeška koča, children can feed and observe goats, Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs, chickens and friendly horses.

The regional cycling route Kamnik–Mengeš–Trzin–Ljubljana passes through the centre of Mengeš and the settlement of Loka pri Mengšu. The Domžalski slamnik cycling route also passes through Mengeš. It is 49.4 km long, has 280 m of elevation gain and is rated as difficult.

The Mengeška koča serves hot stew dishes and homemade cold-cut platters. At weekends, lunch featuring traditional Slovenian dishes is offered there.
