Gornja Radgona: Hotels amid wine tradition and nature

The historic old town of Gornja Radgona developed in the 13th century below the castle hill. Gornji Gris and Spodnji Gris formed its central areas. Together with the castle hill of Radgonski grad and a winemaking history dating back to the 9th century, they create a townscape in which historical landmarks and regional wine culture stand closely side by side.

Culture and history

Radgonski grad stands on a 265-metre-high hill, offering expansive views of the surrounding area. Today, the complex is considered an important cultural monument and bears witness to the rich history and architectural heritage of this part of Slovenia. Radgonski grad was first mentioned in historical sources in the 12th century; the Slovenian nobleman Radigoj had it built.

The historical traces of the town also include the powder tower, known as the “Pulferturm”. It is an important testament to Gornja Radgona’s former fortifications. Another historic building is located at Lackova ulica 17 in Trate. It dates from 1535; during the Reformation, it housed the oldest known school in the area.

The historic bridge between Radkersburg and Radgona, formerly known as Petersdorf, served the trade in salt, iron, wine, grain and livestock. It is therefore also connected with the goods that played a role in the history of this area.

Nature

Lisjakova struga Forest Park is a place for recreation, relaxation and discovering the natural heritage. Tree species that are protected at state or local level grow in Lisjakova struga. These include the black poplar (Populus nigra L.) and the white willow (Salix alba).

The Obmejna panoramska pot also leads to the town: the cross-border panoramic trail ends in Gornja Radgona and offers views of vineyards as well as a panorama extending across the border. Lisjakova struga also has a beach volleyball court, a bocce court and a basketball hoop. Picnics, various sports and fishing are also possible there.

Wine

Winemaking in the Radgona area dates back to the 9th century. A notable milestone in this development was 1852, when Anton Klainošek founded a champagne cellar in Gornja Radgona.

Radgonske kleti also includes Klet pod slapom. There, a waterfall flows down from the rock of the castle hill. The more than 200-year-old Radgonske kleti can be visited, giving visitors an insight into the production of wine and sparkling wine.

At Dom penine, you can choose between various tasting menus and learn about the characteristics of selected wines. Here, the wine tradition is reflected both in its long historical development and in specific cellars and tasting experiences.

Experiences

Pomurski Sejem is associated with international trade fairs in Gornja Radgona. These events focus on economic sectors in which trade fairs are important for establishing and maintaining partnerships. The town’s appeal thus ranges from historic buildings and wine to internationally oriented events.
