Gornja Radgona: Trails, Castles and Wine along the Mura

Gornja Radgona offers trails, nature, history and wine tradition. The approximately 15 km-long Apolonija Trail begins in Gornja Radgona and invites visitors to discover the natural and cultural heritage of the Municipality of Gornja Radgona. The Apolonija Trail can be used as a hiking or cycling trail. The Border Panorama Route ends in Gornja Radgona, offering views of vineyards and a panorama that stretches across the border.
Culture among castles and urban history
The permanent exhibition in the former Radgona Hospital is entitled “Bridges of Radgona”. The Renaissance Hall of the Špital Museum displays works by Styrian painters and sculptors from the 18th and 19th centuries. The collection of the Špital Museum includes archaeological, ethnological, artistic and other cultural-historical objects, documents and testimonies from places in western Styrian Pomurje or connected with its history and the people who lived there from prehistoric times to the present day.
The Negova Castle complex is a cultural monument of national importance and includes a species-rich herb garden. The interior of the New Negova Castle can be visited individually from April to November. Radgonski grad Castle is first mentioned in the 12th century. Smodniški stolp, also known as the Powder Tower, is an important surviving monument of Gornja Radgona’s former fortifications.
Dajnko’s birthplace is one of the few surviving and restored typical thatched-roof Pannonian houses. The birthplace of Dajnko preserves an ethnological collection of old tools, an original living area with a table and bench, a tiled stove and a black kitchen.
Lakes, springs and protected habitats
Lake Negovsko is an artificial lake covering 11.3 hectares, created by merging three castle ponds. Lake Negovsko has been protected as a landscape park since 1967 and is home to the rare water chestnut (Trapa natans) and the white water lily (Nymphaea alba).
The Pot med jezeri Trail consists of three informative hiking trails suitable for all generations. On the three Pot med jezeri hiking trails, visitors can explore Negova Landscape Park with its diverse flora and fauna; numerous mineral springs and mofettes are distinctive landscape features along the route. Lisjakova struga Forest Park has an educational trail that draws attention to the flora and fauna of a unique habitat along the Mura. Protected plant and animal species can be found along the Mura.
Trails through Negova and along the Mura
The urban trail along the Mura is a paved path with benches, children’s playgrounds, an amphitheatre for events and information boards. The urban trail along the Mura begins at Most prijateljstva on the border with Austria. The Trstenjak Trail begins at the international border crossing in Gornja Radgona, passes through Negova and reaches Janžev Vrh amid vineyards and wine cellars.
A guided tour of Gornja Radgona leads from the old town hospital via Aleja velikih and Spominski park Nikoli veÄŤ, past the statue of the herbalist Apolonija, to Most prijateljstva.
Wine cellars and regional specialities
In the cellars of Radgonske gorice, the production of sparkling wines in Radgona can be traced back to 1852. The Radgonske gorice cellar tour includes three characteristic wine cellars of the Radgona region: “Under the Rock”, “Under the Roman Wheel” and “Under the Waterfall”. The cellar tour includes a Golden Radgona sparkling wine and a still wine.
The experience at Hiša penin Frangež presents sparkling wines together with homemade specialities, anecdotes, information and the story of their production. During the “Untouched by Light” experience, the sparkling wine of the same name is served in complete darkness. The traditional Leopold Market dates back to 1700 and showcases traditional local crafts, Prlekija cuisine, and products from artisans and entrepreneurs.
