Dol pri Hrastniku: Nature, Climbing and Local Festivals
Dol pri Hrastniku combines distinctive landscapes with a lively calendar of local events and specific opportunities for climbers, hikers and cyclists. At its centre stands the Church of St James, at an elevation of approximately 310 metres. The ambitious neo-Romanesque building has a cruciform ground plan and a fully vaulted interior.
Culture
The cultural centre of Dol pri Hrastniku is also one of the venues where cultural activities take place. The local community celebrates its holiday on 28 June in memory of the founding of the OF in Dol. Dolska noč also has a firmly established place in the annual calendar: it takes place every year in the centre of Dol pri Hrastniku, and in recent years has been held in front of the Dolanka sports hall. On the last Saturday in June, locals gather there to enjoy food, drinks and music.
Dolanka sports hall is available to schools, clubs and sports enthusiasts, and is also used for competitions and events. Its large car park serves as a venue for Dolska noč, the Kramarski sejem and the traditional annual blessing of motorcycles and motorcyclists. The Kramarski sejem takes place every year on 10 March, Martyrs’ Day, in the courtyard and car park in front of Dolanka sports hall in Dol. Visitors can buy dried goods, dried fruit, clothing and seedlings there.
Nature
The Gore area, with its dense network of walking trails, lies nearby. These trails offer beautiful views of the surrounding hills and the Sava Valley. Gore is suitable for trips and picnics; at the same time, Planinski dom Gore is a checkpoint on the Zasavska Trail.
Kalska planota lies at an elevation of more than 950 metres and provides shelter for numerous plant and animal species. Various hikes towards Mrzlica and Šmohor begin there. Kopitnik encompasses rare and endangered habitat types and is part of the Natura 2000 network. It is also a popular destination for hikers and cyclists.
Climbing and Hiking
The Pod Škalo climbing area has 44 climbing routes. The routes are equipped for both beginners and more experienced climbers. The area is visited by Slovenian and international professional as well as recreational climbers. Alongside the walking trails in Gore and the hikes from Kalska planota, this provides another clearly defined outdoor focus.
One starting point for the Sovretov pohod is located in the car park in front of Dolanka sports hall in Dol; from there, the hike takes approximately one and a half hours. In this way, different forms of exploring the area come together in Dol pri Hrastniku: short trails and picnic spots in Gore, protected habitats on Kalska planota and Kopitnik, marked climbing routes at Pod Škalo, and an organised hiking departure from Dolanka.
