Hotels in Hrastnik – Mining Heritage, Nature and Culture

When you explore Hrastnik, evidence of mining and glassmaking meets nature trails, regional specialities and a diverse programme of events. The town and its municipality combine historic sites with activities centred on hiking, water and culture. The cultural heritage described here relates to Hrastnik, while Funšterc originates from the Zasavje region and Krumpantoč later spread to other parts of the region as well.

Culture

The Hrastnik Museum is housed in a former German school building. Its collections focus on archaeology, glassmaking, the chemical industry, coal mining and puppet theatre. The town’s history also includes Mlakarjevo stanovanje and Villa de Seppi. Mlakarjevo stanovanje is designated as a cultural monument of local importance and preserves two rooms from a former miner’s apartment in an old mining colony. Villa de Seppi was built based on the model of Miramare Castle near Trieste.

Further traces of culture can be found at various locations throughout the municipality. In the local community of Steklarna Hrastnik, near the petrol station, there is a Roman settlement dating from the 1st to the 4th century. A chapel stands in front of the Barbara mine entrance. In the centre of Hrastnik there is a church built in 1936. The Hočijeva Gallery occasionally displays works by the painter Leopold Hočevar, who was born in Hrastnik.

Nature

The themed Pot SREČNO hiking trail passes through the municipalities of Laško, Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi. Of the total 29.7 kilometres, 9.3 kilometres lie within the municipality of Hrastnik. The trail runs mostly through nature and includes preserved structures and exhibits of technical heritage.

Within the municipality of Hrastnik, Kopitnik is a starting point for hikes to Gore, Kal, Turje, Rimske Toplice and Zidani Most. An important botanical site encompasses around 200 plant species and a mix of Illyrian and alpine habitats. Due to its rare and endangered habitat types, this site is part of Natura 2000.

Events

Several recurring events shape the public programme. The annual Sovretov pohod starts at Hrastnik railway station or at the Dolanka sports hall in Dol pri Hrastniku and follows an easy route to Šavna Peč, the birthplace of Anton Sovre. Hrastkov dan is an annual children’s and family festival in Hrastnik featuring bouncy castles, creative workshops and presentations by local associations.

The Hrastnik Trail takes place on Kal planina. The running competitions start and finish there; organised hikes are also offered. Twice a year, in June and December, Jamatlon takes place as an underground obstacle event in a mine between Hrastnik and Trbovlje. Rdeči revirji is considered an international festival of performing arts; its venues are listed as Hrastnik, Trbovlje and Zagorje ob Savi, as well as Litija. With street theatre, dance and circus, the festival brings the mining heritage to life.

Water-based and leisure activities include the Center vodnih športov, which offers tourists organised rafting trips on the Sava. In addition, the indoor 25-metre swimming pool in Hrastnik is open in the afternoons for recreational swimming and other swimming activities.

Regional Cuisine

Funšterc, also known as knapovsko sonce, is a dish from the Zasavje region. Krumpantoč, also known as Krumpatoč or Krumpentoč, is an old speciality of glassworkers that later spread to other parts of Zasavje as well. Both names refer to a regional food culture closely connected with local working environments.
