Vopovlje: Cultural Monuments and Cycling Route in the Village

Culture

The Slovene Ethnographic Museum lists a wooden house near Dovnjek in Vopovlje. The reference to Dovnjek is part of the name and precisely situates the wooden house within the village. In addition, there are three entries named Vopovlje registered as cultural monuments. “Vopovlje – Kapelica zaprtega tipa” is registered as a cultural monument. “Vopovlje – Razpelo na polju vzhodno od vasi” is also registered as a cultural monument. The name refers to a crucifix in a field east of the village. The third entry is called “Vopovlje – Razpelo ob poti proti Zgornjemu Zalogu” and refers to a crucifix beside the road towards Zgornji Zalog. The three names therefore differ not only linguistically, but also through their respective location references: Kapelica zaprtega tipa, the field east of the village, and the road to Zgornji Zalog.

History

With Jernej Basaj, Vopovlje’s historical connection extends beyond the aforementioned architectural heritage. Jernej Basaj was born in Vopovlje in 1719. At the age of 23, he was already an officer of the Military Frontier in Senj. The designation Military Frontier and the place name Senj are part of this biographical stage. Jernej Basaj later rose to the rank of general. His connection to Vopovlje is thus specifically defined by his place of birth, year of birth, age, military rank, and subsequent promotion to general.

Cycling

The cycling routes are also directly connected with Vopovlje. The Cerklje–Lahovče–Cerklje cycling route passes through Vopovlje. Its name includes the places Cerklje and Lahovče and also makes Cerklje both the starting point and the endpoint of the designation. In the area of the Municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem, the cycling routes are additionally marked in the field with orientation signs.
