Stiška Vas: Church, History and Cycle Route 7
Stiška Vas combines a remarkable ecclesiastical historical tradition with archaeological traces and the official Cycle Route 7 “Cerklje–Jezerca–Cerklje”. The route is 27.2 km long, has 1,020 metres of elevation gain and climbs steeply through Stiška Vas. The village lies at around 1,000 m above sea level, providing a clear landscape setting for the historic sites around the Holy Cross and Gradišče.
Culture
Near Stiška Vas, Gradišče is protected by artificial defensive embankments and steep terrain above the Reka valley. The settlement dates from the 5th millennium BC and is considered the oldest known settlement in the area of today’s Municipality of Cerklje. A find beneath Stiška Vas also points to a long history: a hoard of 49 Roman coins was concealed in a cave.
The name Stiška Vas refers to the Holy Cross, not to the Stična Monastery. The present Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1751 on a nearby hill after the older church had been demolished. The painting on its main altar is by Jožef Goetzl; a Pietà is located in a niche on the right-hand side. In the past, the church was a much-visited destination for pilgrimages during Lent.
The Archaeological Exhibition in Cerklje is also part of the archaeological trail. It can be visited by prior arrangement during the official opening hours of the Municipality of Cerklje na Gorenjskem.
