Cerkvenjak – Hotels amid Culture, Trails and Wine

On the hill of Cerkvenjak stands the parish church of Saint Anthony the Hermit. The parish church of Saint Anthony in Cerkvenjak is a Late Gothic church built between 1516 and 1546; it was first mentioned as early as 1299. It contains Gothic frescoes dating from 1395 to 1400.

Culture

In the centre of Cerkvenjak stands the Ovtar sculpture, depicting a traditional guardian of the vineyards. Johanezova trta was also planted in the centre on 24 April 2004. The vine is a cutting from the more than 400-year-old Stara trta in Maribor, described as the oldest vine in the world. The museum collection of Feliks Rajh is also on display at the Tušak homestead in Cerkvenjak. It comprises 800 different exhibits.

Walking and Cycling

The Klopotčeva educational and walking trail runs through the rolling hills of Cerkvenjak and the valley of the Andrenski potok. It provides information about various ecosystems, characteristic plant and animal species, water, and the cultural and natural heritage of the landscape. Pot med jezeri consists of three content-rich hiking trails suitable for all generations. The section of Pot med jezeri through Cerkvenjak connects an archaeological site with an ethnographic collection.

The circular cycling route along the boundaries of the Municipality of Cerkvenjak begins in the centre of Cerkvenjak. It is approximately 25 kilometres long and takes about three hours by bicycle. The Pomurska Mountain Trail leads from Negova via the Archaeological Park in Brengova to the centre of Cerkvenjak, where the PPP-15 control stamp is located. The Cerkvenjak Tourist Information Centre organises excursions with a local tour guide.

From the tower of the fire station in Cerkvenjak, there are views of the Pomurska plain, the eastern foothills of the Karawanks in Slovenia and Austria, Pohorje, Boč, Donačka gora and Ivančica in Croatia, and, in clear weather, as far as Lake Balaton in Hungary.

Wine and Regional Cuisine

The VTC 13 Wine Tourism Road runs through twelve municipalities, including Cerkvenjak. In and around Cerkvenjak, it takes visitors to local winegrowers and vinotheques, inns, tourist and excursion farms, as well as other providers such as organic farms, beekeepers and fruit growers.

The Cerkvenjaška Wine Queen promotes the wines and winegrowers from the Cerkvenjak area. The title is awarded for two years at the central Martinovanje celebration. The experience at the Firbas Homestead includes traditional dishes such as Tünka meat, Lük, sour soup, pork belly and Prlekija layer cake.
