Gočova: Hotels, Roman Cultural Landscape and Rupnik Line

The Roman burial mound cemetery of Podgradnom in Gočova is the largest cemetery in the Gočova settlement area and an important sacred site in the Roman cultural landscape. Two burial mounds were archaeologically investigated at Gočovski vrh, revealing stone cist graves and Roman pottery.

Culture

At the eastern edge of the forest along the Nadbišec–Gočova road lies Gočova – Gomila I, a single, undetermined and partially excavated burial mound. It has a diameter of 15 metres and is 1.1 metres high. Due to its prominent location on the Gočova plateau, it is an important visual landmark in the Roman cultural landscape.

At the western edge of the forest along the Nadbišec–Gočova road lies Gočova – Rimska gomila ob cesti Gočova–Nadbišec, likewise a single, undetermined and partially excavated burial mound. It has a diameter of 13 metres and is 0.8 metres high. Due to its prominent location on the Gočova plateau, this burial mound is also an important visual landmark in the Roman cultural landscape.

Routes and Fortifications

The Zavrh–Sveta Trojica–Negova route passes over Gočovski vrh to the fire station in Gočova, where it connects to the Ptuj–Lenart regional road. This route connects the ridge with the settlement and then leads to a regional road connection.

The Rupnik Line in Gočova is a fortification system. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia began constructing it along the borders before the Second World War to protect itself from Italian attacks. The Rupnik Line fortifications in Gočova include an anti-tank emplacement for a gun, connected by a trench to a machine-gun emplacement. A supply trench leads from this machine-gun emplacement into the hinterland.
