Veržej: Culture, Nature and Trails along the Mur

Veržej can be explored through tangible evidence of craftsmanship, history and the river landscape. Babičev mlin on the Mur is the only surviving and still operating mill on the right bank of the Mur in Veržej. It uses an externally mounted wooden waterwheel installed on two boats and is designated as a technical and cultural monument. Babičev mlin offers various types of flour: white flour, rye flour, bread flour, buckwheat flour and corn flour.

Culture and craftsmanship

At Čebelarstvo Tigeli, the Bee Museum complements this cultural focus. The beehive housing the Bee Museum is octagonal and built according to a pavilion plan. Visitors can view honey extractors, bee smokers, wax presses and a more than 300-year-old log hive. The museum also preserves a beehive from the late 19th century with its original equipment, representing exceptionally rich cultural heritage. Čebelarstvo Tigeli offers tours of its museum and herb gardens.

The DUO Craft Centre also brings together several areas, including a pottery workshop, an exhibition and sales gallery, an ecomuseum and the Puščenjak Hall for exhibitions. Through various workshops and research camps, the Craft Centre passes on knowledge of the craft heritage of eastern Slovenia to younger generations.

In the centre of the market settlement stands the Church of St Michael the Archangel, a fine example of Baroque architecture. It was first mentioned in 1545 as a branch church of Križevci and has a main altar dating from the second quarter of the 18th century.

History and memorial sites

The Slavko Osterc Memorial Park in Veržej commemorates the composer: it contains a bust of the composer Slavko Osterc and a memorial room. The memorial to Dr Fran Kovačič in Veržej also includes a memorial room and a bust. The Kovačičevi spominski večeri have a regular place in the annual calendar. They have been held every March in Veržej since 1997 and are a traditional event. The Osterčev spominski dan has been held in Veržej on the last Saturday in May since 1963.

Nature and trails

The white daffodil is a protected plant species in Veržej and grows at three municipal sites. White daffodils can be seen each spring in the meadows of Veržej.

The “Mrtvice reke Mure” educational trail is a 2.5 km marked forest trail along a former channel of the Mur. As visitors walk and observe, the trail explains the ecology of the floodplain landscape and introduces its plant and animal species, as well as the lives of the people along the Mur.

The Plavčkova TURA is a 17.5 km circular route open to pedestrians and cyclists. The Murska kolesarska pot – desni breg is also available for cycling excursions. It is 125 km long and follows an easy cycling route through the flat landscape along the Mur to Veržej; users can join or leave it at any point along the route.
