Gradac: Castle, Park and History on the Lahinja

At the heart of Gradac stands Gradac Castle, which is protected as a cultural heritage site of national importance. It is also considered one of the best-preserved castles in Bela krajina. Its setting and historical fabric are connected with several specific places in the village, making Gradac a destination where architectural history, landscape and remembrance come together closely.

Culture

The park of Gradac Castle is the only documented castle garden in Bela krajina. The park laid out behind Gradac Castle has been preserved in its basic form to this day. It also includes a grave with a stone sarcophagus. The castle’s present appearance dates from the first half of the 19th century. Thus, the park’s design, the building’s traditional form and a single stone grave monument stand side by side in one place.

Landscape

Gradac lies on both banks of the Lahinja at a large bend in the river. The river therefore provides a clear geographical reference for the town and the castle complex. The Lahinja is not only part of the town’s setting but also appears along the Kučar cycling route, which leads towards Gradac.

History

The Red Cross of Slovenia was founded on 18 June 1944 at Sokolski dom in Gradac. Gradac also has a memorial room commemorating the founding of the Red Cross of Slovenia. Another memorial was added on 29 April 1951: on that day, a monument bearing the names of 41 fallen fighters and victims of fascist violence from Gradac, Klošter and Vranoviči was unveiled in Gradac. These places and dates anchor the history of the village in specific buildings and monuments.

Cycling Route

The Kučar cycling route leads towards Gradac, where a medieval castle stands on a meander of the Lahinja. The route therefore connects its course with a precisely identified landscape and architectural reference. From Novo Mesto, the Kučar cycling route can be reached by car or train.
