Jareninski Dol: Hotels, Culture and Hiking Trails
Jareninski Dol 64 is a well-preserved example of Baroque rural architecture from the end of the 18th century.
History and Sacred Sites
The cemetery chapel of Jareninski Dol is a round chapel from the second half of the 19th century. It stands in the cemetery above the southern part of the village. Associated with it are gravestones of priests and soldiers from Jarenina who fell in the First World War, as well as a sarcophagus and a depiction of the Crucified Christ.
Next to the church stands the round ossuary of Saint Michael, whose masonry dates from the 12th century. It is one of the few surviving examples of this type of architecture in Slovenia. The Church of the Assumption is partly Romanesque in the nave and otherwise entirely Late Gothic. Its Late Gothic bell tower has an original stone roof, which is described as unique in Slovenia.
Jarenina was one of the Pražupnija and played an important role in the Slovenske gorice area. In the surrounding area, Jareninski dvor, dating from 1074, stands on Polički Vrh. Until 1907, it was the economic and administrative seat of Admont Abbey for its estates in the Slovenske gorice. The “Doživi Kulaka” project also draws on history: it refers to the film “Moj ata, socialistični kulak,” filmed in Jarenina, and includes an exhibition and a festival.
Hiking and Cycling Trails
The 21 km-long Pesnica–Jarenina cycling trail explicitly passes through Jareninski Dol. The Jarenina Hiking Trail begins at Gostilna Lipa and follows an 18 km-long route through Jarenina, Vajgen, Polički Vrh, Vukovski Vrh and Vukovski Dol. Overall, it is described as less demanding, although some ascents include somewhat more strenuous sections; at the same time, the trail is suitable for recreational hikers.
The sights along the Jarenina Hiking Trail include Zmrzlek, known for its cold spring. Another historical stop is located on the road towards Šentilj: a plague marker from 1532 stands there.
Museum, Wine and Regional Dishes
The Alfi Nipič Museum presents a permanent exhibition about the life and musical career of singer Alfi Nipič. On display are photographs, posters, audio and video material, articles, books, gold records, awards, plaques, medals and traditional clothing. The attic contains a multipurpose hall intended for musical performances as well as cultural and educational events.
The wine shop in the basement of the Alfi Nipič Museum offers tastings of wine and sparkling wine from local winegrowers. Cars and buses can park directly at the museum. The Ovtar Jarenina Tourism Association also features the traditional dishes “Koruzni tomerl z jabolki” and “Jareninska gibanica.”
Village Character and Events
In Jarenina, most of the older houses have been restored, while the village center has preserved its characteristic appearance. The Jarenina parish festival takes place on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption.
