Muta: Culture and Nature along the Bistrica and Drava

At the confluence of the Bistrica and the Drava stands the Rotunda of St. John the Baptist in Muta. Its round nave has a shingle roof and a small roof turret. The nave is lit by an original semicircular Romanesque window, while three Gothic windows illuminate the choir. This building alone brings together an unusual ground plan and several clearly recognisable architectural details.

Culture

Muta’s cultural heritage includes the Museum of Blacksmithing, Foundry and Firefighting. It is located in the former Kienhofen estate and preserves blacksmithing, foundry and firefighting artefacts from the 18th century. The museum also presents the more than 400-year tradition of blacksmithing, foundry and firefighting in Muta. The preserved artefacts and the long local tradition together represent three closely connected areas of historic craftsmanship and firefighting.

Another historic church is located in Zgornja Muta. The parish church of St. Margaret was first mentioned in 1349 as a chapel and between 1460 and 1465 as a parish church. Its furnishings include Baroque features from the 17th century; a gravestone from 1595 is also set into the exterior façade. The building therefore reflects different periods through both written references and visible architectural details.

Nature

Muta lies in a pre-Alpine landscape with rich flora and a relatively large number of surface waters. The town connects the terraces and flat areas of the Drava Valley with hilly hinterland along the state border. Different landforms thus lie side by side in the landscape: the flatter areas of the Drava Valley and the hilly hinterland form two explicitly named sides of this region.

Activities

Mitnica is located in Spodnja Muta, a sports and tourist park on the banks of the Bistrica and the Drava. Mitnica provides tourist information and brochures from providers in the wider surrounding area. The grounds also feature an open-air natural amphitheatre and a nearby sports field for events. The park thus combines a waterside location with information services and two explicitly mentioned event spaces.

Near the Ecological Chapel, a bridge crosses the Bistrica to Sedelnik Waterfall. In the nearby surroundings of the Ecological Chapel, a marked mountain trail also leads to Sv. Jernej, taking about one and a half hours on foot. Sedelnik Waterfall is likewise described in the nearby surroundings of the Ecological Chapel as the highest waterfall in the Kozjak area. The bridge, mountain trail and waterfall are each located in the vicinity of the Ecological Chapel; a walking time of about one and a half hours is given for the route to Sv. Jernej.
