Zgornja Orlica – Hotels, Nature and Chapels

Nature

The settlement of Orlica is located in a hilly, predominantly forested landscape in Zgornja Orlica. It consists of scattered, remote farms. The dispersed location of the farms and the topography form the spatial framework of the area. The landscape is therefore characterised by individual farmsteads and the hilly, predominantly forested surroundings.

The Sgerm Spruce stands on the Sgerm farm in Zgornja Orlica. It is 61.8 metres tall and is considered the tallest spruce in Slovenia and throughout Central Europe.

Culture

Culture is reflected here in individual chapels and their distinctive architectural features.

The UÅ¡man Chapel contains a statue of Mary with Jesus. The chapel has a square ground plan and an arched termination dating from the second half of the 19th century. It stands south of the UÅ¡man farm and east of the road between Zgornja Orlica and Vuhred. The religious motif, architectural form, date and location all relate to the same chapel. The two directional details describe its position both in relation to the farm and to the road between the two named places.

The Miklavc Chapel has a rectangular ground plan and a gabled roof covered with sheet metal. It stands above the dwelling on the Miklavc farm at the address Zgornja Orlica 28. Thus, both its exterior form and its specific connection to the farm and address are clearly defined. Its location is identified by the farm name, its position above the dwelling and the house number.

The Breznikova Chapel combines its architectural form with a change over time. It is a masonry chapel of the enclosed type with a rectangular ground plan. On the Breznik farm, it stands at the address Zgornja Orlica 25, next to the local road towards Janževski Vrh. In 1984, it was rebuilt based on its original model after being destroyed in a collision with a lorry. The year therefore refers to the rebuilding following this destruction and is directly connected with the original model.
