Gorenje: Church, Culture and Trails

In the centre of the village of Gorenje stands the filial church of Saint John the Baptist. Together with cultural events, theatre and trails through the surrounding area, it provides a tangible way to experience the special features of the place.

Culture

The filial church of Saint John the Baptist is a Baroque church built on a late Gothic foundation. It was presumably built in the late Middle Ages as a Romanesque baptistery. Its chapel was expanded between 1660 and 1730, while the chancel dates from the second half of the 18th century. Several historical periods are therefore connected in a single building.

The Gorenje Cultural Association also contributes to the local annual programme. Every year, it organises the cycling tour “Potepanje po okolici” and the Mother’s Day event “V pričakovanju pomladi”. The association also revives old customs and traditions every year with the arrival of Santa Claus and the giving of presents to children. In the village of Gorenje, in the municipality of Šmartno ob Paki, the Gorenje Cultural Association has both an adult theatre group and a children’s group. Its first performance, “Srote”, received a gold award at a national gathering of children’s theatre groups.

At the Gorenje–Šmartno ob Paki cemetery, there is a memorial marker for Stanko Zager bearing the inscription “ZAGERJEVI”. Stanko Zager was killed on 4 July 1944.

Nature

The “Pot kulturne in naravne dediščine” trail is 7 kilometres long and runs through relatively easy terrain. It can be explored on foot or by bicycle. A guided tour of this route can be arranged with the Šmartno ob Paki Tourist Association.

The “Pot spominov” memorial trail also passes through Gorenje. It is approximately 18 kilometres long and can be completed in five hours at a moderate walking pace. A longer hike can be undertaken independently or with a guide.

Region

In the area around Šmartno ob Paki, a guided cycling tour through the vineyards can end at the Primožič winery, located at the highest point of Mali vrh, with a tasting of a good wine.
