Velenje: Find a hotel and discover the castle, lake and museums

Velenje combines an impressive castle history with a lake, museums, nature experiences and events. The most prominent landmark is Velenje Castle: it is one of the best-preserved castles in Slovenia and acquired its present Renaissance appearance in the 16th century.

Culture, history and cityscape

Velenje Museum is housed in Velenje Castle. There, you can explore eleven permanent exhibitions from the fields of museum and gallery studies. The collection includes, among other things, African exhibits, mastodon remains and contemporary Slovenian art. The Velenje Castle Chapel also preserves a historic collection: it displays a small collection of Baroque ecclesiastical art from the former Church of St George in Å kale. This church had to be demolished because of mining subsidence in the mid-20th century.

Another unusual address is the House of Minerals. It displays more than 12,000 different minerals from the private collection of collector and expert Jože Rihtar. This presentation is complemented by a geological collection of gemstones, semiprecious stones and ornamental stones.

The city’s cultural life is concentrated, among other places, at the Velenje Gallery. It is housed in a modernist building in the city centre on Tito Square. It primarily presents contemporary art from the Šalek and Upper Savinja valleys, Slovenia and Europe. The collection comprises almost 1,000 works, including Slovenian modern and contemporary art, graphics, photographs, drawings and an international collection of paintings.

Tito Square is designed as a venue for gatherings, cultural events and celebrations and is surrounded by Velenje’s most important buildings. The monumental statue of Marshal Tito dominates the central city square complex.

Lake and nature

Vista is a distinctive visitor facility on Lake Velenje. Vista features a 14-metre-high viewing platform and a long pier on Lake Velenje. The complex is located next to Velenje Beach and serves as a venue for cultural, sporting, entertainment and tourism events.

Velenje Beach is the designated bathing area on Lake Velenje. Lifeguards and other trained staff ensure safety there. The beach is also a starting or finishing point of the Å TREKNA cycling route.

The park in Velenje also displays remarkable natural diversity. It features aquatic and terrestrial habitats; around 120 bird species have been recorded there, including 29 endangered species. In addition to its role in conservation education and teaching, the park offers good and interesting opportunities for recreation.

Mining and special experiences

The city’s industrial history can be experienced first-hand at the Slovenian Mining Museum. The museum takes visitors 160 metres underground and conveys the miners’ lives through 20 scenes and 15 dolls. The tour ends with a ride on the underground railway.

Experience Socialism also offers a retro walk through Velenje. The route leads from the statue of Marshal Tito to the former workers’ club. The walk includes interactive stations and a tasting of an authentic socialist workers’ meal.

Events

The Pika Festival takes place every year in Velenje and is Slovenia’s largest children’s festival. In the centre of Velenje, it features theatre, puppet and dance performances, concerts, creative workshops, exhibitions and interactive experiences.
