Topolšica: Thermal Baths, Nature and History

History and Culture

One significant historical connection leads back to 1945: on 9 May, German Colonel General Alexander Löhr signed the unconditional surrender of his units in Topolšica, located near Šoštanj. The memorial room “Topolšica 9 May 1945” is connected with this event. It can be visited around the clock throughout the year; admission is free every day of the year. The history of the thermal baths also goes back a long way. Terme Topolšica first opened to the public in 1838, at that time under the name Florjanove toplice. Topolšica is also home to St. James’ Church, which is listed in the municipal register under the designation S 19 in area K 9/5c.

Spa Park and Thermal Baths

The spa park in Topolšica is protected as garden-architectural heritage. Protected walking paths along the Toplica stream run through the spa park. Another focal point is the year-round indoor and outdoor pool complex at Terme Topolšica. It includes a semi-Olympic-size pool with direct access to the outdoor area. Terme Topolšica also offers massages and care programmes.

Nature and Paths

Around Topolšica and Lom, the butterfly serves as a connecting theme in nature. All three variants of the “Za metulji na pot” butterfly trail begin at the Topolšica natural spa. The themed butterfly trail runs through Topolšica and Lom. Route 3 leads from the Topolšica spa resort along its slopes. More than 140 butterfly species live year-round along Route 3 from Topolšica to Lom. In the surrounding area of Topolšica and Lom, many different butterfly species find suitable living conditions thanks to the varied terrain and the distinctive microclimate associated with a thermal-water spring.

The “Za metulji na pot” butterfly trail offers views of the Šaleška Valley as well as impressions of flowering meadows and surrounding forests. In addition to this themed trail, the Topolšica podeželje Tourism Association maintains well-kept hiking trails such as the “Sončna pot čez Lom”. “Metuljev dan” is a family event associated with the Topolšica podeželje Tourism Association.
