Smrečje: Pilgrimage Routes, Cultural Heritage and Hotels
Smrečje is closely associated with the Church of the Assumption of Mary and the routes leading to it. For centuries, the church has been a gathering place for pilgrims; for centuries, pilgrimage routes have led to it in Smrečje. It stands in the village at an altitude of approximately 715 metres and is dated to the 10th or 12th century.
Hiking
A marked pilgrimage route begins in the old centre of Podlipa and leads to the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Smrečje. Along the Podlipa–Smrečje pilgrimage route, there are benches where hikers can rest. At a moderate walking pace, the route takes approximately three hours and is also suitable for family outings.
A longer hiking route leads from Smrečje via the Church of the Assumption of Mary and Račevsko jezero to the mountain hut at Vrh sv. Treh Kraljev. In addition to the marked pilgrimage route, longer routes in the village and its surroundings are therefore also a focus.
Culture
The Rusova Chapel stands above a spring next to the former pilgrimage route to the church and is registered as immovable cultural heritage. The Rusova Chapel near the Church of the Assumption of Mary in Smrečje is a 19th-century chapel; a discovered fresco bears the year 1868.
A keystone featuring a depiction of the Virgin and Child from the late 15th century is built into the Smrekar House above the entrance. The Kovtrov Mill also preserves tangible traces of its history: it has a restored water wheel and a restored section of the inner milling mechanism bearing the engraved year 1822.
Historically, grain from Rovte, Ligojna and Stara Vrhnika was brought to the Kovtrov Mill. Vinko Železnik continues to welcome visitor groups and introduce them to the historic work and life at the Kovtrov Mill.
At a commemorative event, traditional lace by Julka Fortuna and Marija Oblak from Smrečje was shown, along with a more modern version made of coloured yarn that serves as a fashion accessory.
Nature
Račevsko jezero is a periodically water-bearing lake that can dry out completely once a year. It lies at the transition between the Alpine and Dinaric worlds.
