Hotels in Vrhnika: Roman History and a Landscape of Springs

Vrhnika combines literary history, Roman traces and a distinctive landscape of springs. The legacy of the writer Ivan Cankar is central; outside the town, paths lead to the springs of the Ljubljanica, through wooded landscapes and up to Planina. There are also historical exhibitions, guided tours, a virtual journey through time and specific routes with different trail profiles.

Culture and History

The Cankar Memorial House is located in the house where Ivan Cankar was born in 1876 and is designated as a cultural monument. Furniture and other furnishings from the late 19th century have been preserved there and illustrate the everyday life of the Cankar family. The connection to Cankar is also visible on the “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” trail: it ends in Močilnik at the springs of the Ljubljanica. A three-hour guided version of this trail also includes a visit to the Cankar Memorial House.

The Roman past can be seen in several places. In Turnovše, the remains of a Roman observation tower have been preserved; it was part of the Claustra Alpium Iuliarum fortification system. Next to the cemetery in Vrhnika, part of the corner tower of a pentagonal Roman fortification has been preserved. The guided city tour “A Walk Through History” through the center of Vrhnika lasts about two hours. It presents Roman Vrhnika as Nauportus and includes visible remains of the Roman defensive wall of Claustra Alpium Iuliarum.

The “Time Station Vrhnika” exhibition is located in the renovated Vrhnika–Trg railway station, the later town railway station of Vrhnika. It covers the history of transport in the Vrhnika area and includes an interactive quiz. It also offers a virtual train journey through various historical time stations. The “Ljubljanica River Exhibition” in Vrhnika has discontinued its activities.

Springs and Forest Landscape

Močilnik is a spring valley where the Veliki Močilnik and Mali Močilnik springs flow into the Mala Ljubljanica. Veliki Močilnik emerges beneath 40-meter-high rock walls, which are also called Hudičeve skale. Above the bridge at the spring in the Močilnik valley, the rock bears the imprint “Jazonova pest”.

Trails and Experiences

The wooded Planina lies above Vrhnika at an elevation of 733 meters. There is a mountain hut and a 22-meter-high observation tower there. Planina is a junction of several hiking trails, including the E6 European long-distance path. Two differently described routes are mentioned for the ascent and descent: “Pot čez Špico” is the somewhat steeper and shorter ascent route to Planina, while “Pot mimo Bukve” is considered the gentler and somewhat longer descent route from Planina.

The “Tempelj zmaja Lintverna” experience begins in Vrhnika and follows a 4.5-kilometer route in each direction; the final kilometer is a mountain hiking trail. The route for this experience is a circular trail and passes through a landscape with a stream, ponds, small waterfalls and wild forest.

In addition to the historical tours, there are therefore trails with clearly distinguishable lengths, directions and terrain types. On the “Pot Cankarjeve mladosti” trail, the literary connection comes at the end in Močilnik; the three-hour guided version also combines it with the Cankar Memorial House. The trails to Planina, by contrast, differ in their ascent and descent profiles.

Cycling and Local Specialty

Biciklanc is a bicycle rental system also available to visitors who would like to get around Vrhnika more easily by bicycle. At the summit of Planina, the mountain hut serves plum-filled Štruklji as a Vrhnika specialty.
