The M41 Pamir Highway runs through Shughnan District. Cyclists and motorcyclists travel along this high-altitude highway through Shughnan. Shughnon District also has 32 cultural sites.
Distinctive natural features include the geothermal waters of Jelondeh, with a temperature of nearly 80°C. The Pir Shonosir Chashma spring also stands out because of its water temperature: its water is very cold in summer and does not freeze in winter.
Which cultural sites are worth getting oriented around in more detail?
Kofirqal’a is located in the village of Boghev, in Suchon Jamoat, Shughnon District. The site is an archaeological complex consisting of four fortresses. Three of these four fortresses have been fully excavated.
Boghev can be reached from Khorog. Kofirqal’a is accessible via a 1–2 km turnoff followed by a walk.
Another historically and religiously significant site is “Didor”. It is located near the source of Nasiri Khusrav on the right side of the road. At this site, Ismailis from Badakhshan met their imam for the first time in the history of Badakhshan in 1994.
The cultural heritage of Shughnon District also includes the house museum of the Tajik national hero Shirinsho Shotemor. In Porshnev, the sacred Pir Shonosir Chashma spring is associated with Nosiri Khisrav. A small museum dedicated to Nasiri Khusrav, built by local residents, is also located near the spring.
Which architectural forms and crafts shape the cultural impression?
The mausoleum of Piri Saidfarukhsho stands in Saroi Bahor. It is a square building with a tiered wooden ceiling in the “Chorkhona” style. The ceiling features calligraphic depictions of mythical birds and plants.
Porshnev also offers an insight into local handicrafts. In a jewelry workshop, souvenirs and pieces of jewelry are made from gemstones.
