Kharkov
Kharkov is one of the largest industrial cities of Ukraine, the city with population of almost two million people. Major tourist streams that pass through the city are transit or business. Kharkov itself does not possess the charisma of the tourist centers of Europe, which, for example, have the Ukrainian capital Kiev.
However, it is quite wrong to say that in Kharkov usual tourist couldn’t enjoy anything. Kharkov is wonderful only because, being a model of the Soviet architecture, it has many unique and interesting places which are much interesting than images from glossy tourist postcards.
First thing that tourist is offered in Kharkov is to visit the Freedom Square - a huge space in the heart of the city, that limited by the facilities in the typical Soviet gigantism style. The fact that Kharkov firstly is an industrial city is proved by the main building on the square, called the house of Gosprom (State industry). This example of Stalin's architecture became the first high-rise building in Ukraine.
There is a large number of monuments erected in honor of the victory of the Soviet Union in the Second World War in Kharkov. There are also the Memorial complex of Glory (1977), and the fountain «Mirror jet» (1947), as well as a number of sculptures, busts, steles and panels.
Among the religious monuments of Kharkov the most notable are the Assumption and Intercession Cathedrals. Intercession Cathedral is the oldest building in Kharkov. It was built in 17 century and is considered to be a typical example of the Ukrainian church architecture.
There is also a unique transport in Kharkov. This is the cableway, which сonnects the Central Park of Kharkov with the Pavlov field district. The total length of road is about one and a half kilometers. To go by it is fun for everyone. The ticket for a ride costs about 1 Euro.
In general, Kharkov is a city that can astonish even the experienced tourist. In this section we will try to acquaint you both with the most significant sights of Kharkov and with the tourist section: hotels, restaurants and clubs of Kharkov.
