In the early 90es of the last century Vitebsk was considered to become the new capital of Belarus. It was believed that this city with its cultural and historical traditions is more akin to the role of the center of the country than Minsk. However, it didn’t happen. Today Vitebsk is the center of one of the seven regions of Belarus.
Vitebsk gained its popularity due to the artist Marc Chagall. In Vitebsk there is the Chagall museum. Here you can see not only the works of the maestro, but also to get acquainted with the conditions which the future genius had to grow in.
Vitebsk is a festival city. The main event here is considered to be an international festival of Slavonic arts «Slavonic Bazaar». This is one of the few areas where young singers from Eastern Europe can make themselves known. Unfortunately, in recent times the festival is increasingly becoming a political event and more and more goes away from the real creativity.
Vitebsk also has a status of a «city of brides». Due to the unique demographic situation there is one man to four women.
The great place for outing rest are located near Vitebsk. This is first place it is the national park «Braslav Lakes». It includes 30 lakes of different size with stunning natural beauty. The tourist infrastructure has recently started here to develop actively.
