Landscape and Nature

The Zagoria Valley lies between the Lunxhëri Mountains to the west and Dhëmbel to the east. It is a synclinal valley with a narrow valley floor and steep slopes that narrows in its lower section. Rrapi i Shkollës (Sheper) is a natural monument. Rare animals such as brown bears, wildcats, lynx and wolves are found in the Zagori region.

Hiking Trails

The historic Shepherd's Trail connects the Drinos Valley with the Vjosa Valley and the villages of Përmet; this connection has existed there for centuries. Its route leads from Labovë through orchards and vineyards, descends into the Selckë Gorge and continues along the old shepherd's path to Sheper.

At the pass of the Shepherd's Trail, there are sweeping views of the Pindos Mountains in Greece; the imposing Mount Gramoz lies in the background. In summer, the pass serves as pasture for a huge flock of more than 800 sheep.

Roads and Access

The road from Çajupi towards Shepër can only be travelled by a 4×4 vehicle. The journey from Poliçan to Shepër is possible with caution.

Culture and History

The poet and playwright Andon Zako Çajupi was born in Sheper in Zagoria. His house in Sheper is a Category I cultural monument in the field of architectural heritage and cultural tourism.

The remains of an ancient temple dating from the 3rd–2nd century BC have provisionally been identified near Sheper. Residential structures from the same period have also provisionally been identified near Sheper.
