Saranda on the Ionian Sea – Beaches, History and Hotels

History and Culture

Onhezmi is the ancient name of present-day Sarandë. Onhezmi developed into an important port on the Ionian Sea and was a strategic point for trade and maritime connections between Epirus and other areas of the Mediterranean region. The ruins of the Ancient Synagogue are located in Sarandë. The Monastery of the 40 Saints is situated in the Sarandë area and is a religious and historical monument from the Middle Ages.

In the vicinity of Sarandë, Lëkurës Castle was built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during the Ottoman period. In the surrounding area, Lëkurës Castle offers panoramic views of the city, the coast and the Ionian Sea.

Routes and Connections

Sarandë is compact and car-free or designed for pedestrians in many areas, making it easy to explore the city on foot. From central Sarandë, a bus runs hourly along the coast towards the island of Ksamil and onwards to Butrint. Thus, the routes within the city and the connection along the coast described above are two different aspects of a stay: on the one hand, Sarandë can be explored on foot, while on the other hand, there is an hourly bus connection towards other places along the coast.

Sarandë’s tourist information centre provides information about the city and regional attractions and offers maps as well as other visitor materials. From Greece, visitors continue to Sarandë via the ports of Corfu and Igoumenitsa.
