Mursi: Castle, Lake and Mandarins

Culture and History

Malathresa Castle is a cultural monument in Mursi. It is located near the village of Mursi at the foot of Mount Milesë, on a low, rounded hill. The castle is dated from the 4th–3rd century BC to the 3rd–4th century AD; the first archaeological excavations there took place in 1930.

In 2010, a fortified site from the Late Bronze Age and the Hellenistic period was archaeologically excavated on a hill at the northern edge of Mursi. A field survey focused on the modern villages of Mursi and Xarra recorded information on more than 80 sites, including standing monuments.

Paths and Nature

The “Lake of Mursi” trail crosses agricultural fields and then leads to Lake Mursi. Lake Mursi is an artificial lake where waterfowl can be found. The Pavllo River also flows through the fields of Mursi.

“Lake of Mursi” is one of four designated trails in the area of Butrint National Park. From the forest summit on the “Butrinti Peak” trail, the Xarrë–Mursi fields, among other things, are visible.

The paths and places mentioned can be viewed as different reasons for a visit: landscapes, archaeology, harvesting and food each require a different kind of attention.

The village of Mursi hosted the mandarin festival for the fourth consecutive time, an event associated with the citrus harvest. Mursi is one of the villages in the municipality of Konispoli with mandarin plantations; mandarin cultivation is presented as a tourist attraction and in the “Mandarin Farmers” experience.

The “Mandarin Farmers” experience gives visitors the opportunity to take part in the fruit harvest.
