Xarrë combines a striking coastal landscape with archaeological traces, a vibrant village history, and regionally important mandarin cultivation. The character of the town is particularly evident at Cape Stillo, where mountains, rocky coastline, sea views, and nature meet paths, bodies of water, and opportunities for observation.

Nature

Cape Stillo is mountainous, reaches a maximum elevation of 269 meters, and has a rugged, rocky coastline. It offers sea views, while high cliffs and unspoiled nature shape the landscape. The cape is suitable for walking and exploring. During a walk along its edge, visitors can observe typical Mediterranean flora and fauna, including aromatic plants and rare bird species.

The Cape of Stillo Trail also passes through an environment where wild cattle and cows, fish, and various bird species can be observed; foxes and other small animals may also appear there. The waters around Cape Stillo offer opportunities for swimming and underwater exploration.

Geographical Setting

The boundaries of Butrint National Park run along several lines important to Xarrë. The eastern boundary follows the Qenuri–Xarrë line across the ridge of Mount Miles. The southern boundary follows the Xarrë–Shëndëlli–Vrinë line to Stillo.

Culture and History

At the “Mehmet Xhaferi” school in Xarrë, the “Gjurmët e Mia” museum preserves and promotes the community’s historical and cultural memory. As an ethnographic museum, it presents the traditions, history, and culture of the village. Local items donated by residents include livestock bells, household mills, folk costumes, agricultural tools, and objects related to culinary culture.

The Shën Dimitri/Xarra archaeological site was inhabited during the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, approximately 50,000 to 10,000 years ago. Today, due to the retreat of the coastline, it lies about 2 kilometers inland; originally, it was located on the coast. The Paleolithic site near Shën Dimitri/Xarra is one of the important monuments within the 200-hectare area of Butrint.

In the vicinity of Xarrë, Butrint preserves archaeological evidence of a Greek colony, a Roman city, and a bishopric. In Xarrë, the ruins of the aqueduct are also classified as a Category I cultural monument and as a cultural resource for cultural tourism.

Hiking

A footpath connects Cape Stillo with the Cape of Vrinë. In the wider region around Xarrë, the Shepherd’s Trail is described as a 192-kilometer long-distance hiking trail through the wild south of Albania. It follows the old transhumance routes from the Ionian coast to the summit of Mount Gramoz.

The “Shepherds Trail” project was announced as a transhumance route that begins by the sea in the village of Xarrë and leads toward the vast meadows of Mount Gramoz.

Local Character

Xarrë’s agricultural character includes an association of 480 farmers. During the season, they offer around 18,000 tonnes of mandarins to the import and export market. Xarrë also hosted a Mandarin Day, described as a festival that is becoming a tradition in this area known for its citrus and especially mandarin production.
