Shetaj: Kepi i Rodonit, Rodon Castle and Hotels

The Shetaj–Kepi i Rodonit coastal hiking trail begins at the entrance to Shetaj. It follows a dirt track and then continues along the coast to Rodon Castle and St. Anthony's Church; the return to Shetaj is via the road. The sequence of trail sections connects the starting point in Shetaj with the coastal landscape and the two named historical destinations, without conflating the different trail surfaces or the return route via the road.

Coast and Nature

Kepi i Rodonit is a named cape in the vicinity of Shetaj and also a rocky peninsula in the Adriatic Sea on the northern edge of the Bay of Durrës. The peninsula lies between the Bay of Rodon and the Bay of Lalzi. Kepi i Rodonit offers sandy beaches as well as opportunities for nature walks and hiking. In addition, Kepi i Rodonit has the protected status of a “natural monument.” The coastal features, location between the bays, beaches and nature trails are thus all connected to the same clearly named landscape area. The landscape area combines the peninsula's rocky form, its position between two bays and its designated natural and beach features. History and Culture

Rodon Castle was built in the 15th century on the orders of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg as a defensive fortress against Ottoman conquerors. According to historical tradition, Rodon Castle was the place from which Skanderbeg and his family departed for Brindisi in 1466. Rodon Castle offers opportunities for historical exploration. St. Anthony's Church, a cultural monument of historical and architectural value, is located near the castle. St Ndoit's Church is designated as a 14th-century religious monument. Thus, different historical references coexist at this location: the construction of the castle in the 15th century, the traditional account of the departure in 1466, and the separate classification of St Ndoit's Church as dating from the 14th century.
