Spirituality

The name Mashtots is associated with Catholicos Mashtots Yegivardetsi, who held office in 897–898. Later, Mashtots moved to Sevan Island and founded a monastic community there. The Mashtots Chapel is located approximately 2.5 to 3 kilometres east of Tsamakaberd. Believers from various places visit the chapel to seek the intercession of the saint.

The Church of St. Gevorg was reopened to believers on 23 June 2007 and is described as a church with a history of more than one hundred years. Reconstruction began in 1905. In Sevan's Tsamakaberd district, the church was reconstructed in 2006 with the support of Walter Marutyan. It is located approximately 1.5 kilometres from Lake Sevan.

History

The nearby Metsop Fortress is approximately 225 metres long and 25 to 30 metres wide; traces of three towers are still preserved on its walls. Before the lake level fell, the former fortress stood south of Tsamakaberd on a peninsula.

Landscape

The hill south of Tsamakaberd offers views of Lchashen Fortress and Metsop Peak. A former fortress on this hill may have served as a watchtower. From Metsop Peak, the view extends towards Hrazdan and the ancient Lchashen Fortress. The summit of Metsop Fortress rises approximately 600 metres above its surroundings and is difficult to access.
