The Hankavan State Hydrological Reserve follows the upper Marmarik watershed from its sources to the hydrological point near Hankavan. It is located on the slopes of the Tsaghkunyats Mountains at elevations of 1,947 to 2,370 meters and covers 5,202.86 hectares in Kotayk. Protected features include the aquatic ecosystem of the upper Marmarik, mineral spring outflows, and living and non-living natural monuments.

Hiking

Waterfalls on tributaries of the upper Marmarik watershed are located about one kilometer west of the western edge of Hankavan, near the former Ararat children’s recreation center. There are several nearby waterfalls on a right-bank tributary, reaching heights of up to five meters.

Reaching the large waterfall requires a 300-meter ascent on a path running along the tributary, which is described as difficult; a guide is recommended. The highest waterfall in the cascade is described as a picturesque geological monument. The road section to the former Ararat recreation center is fully asphalted and is described as a route of relevance to hikers, cyclists, and motorcyclists.

Culture

A nineteenth-century Greek church is locally regarded as one of Hankavan’s notable landmarks; a burial site is located beside the road into the town. In addition, a church and monuments dating from the seventh century have been preserved in Hankavan.
