Meghri: Hotels and Accommodation
For travelers wishing to book a hotel in Meghri, church paintings, a fortress, traditional crafts, and the surrounding natural environment shape the character of the city.
Culture and History
At the Surb Hovhannes Church, at least three layers of paintings from 1700, 1793, and 1866 have been preserved. The layer from 1700 was probably created by Naghash Hovnatan or one of his students and comprises 23 narrative scenes.
Pokr Tagh is Meghri’s old quarter, with narrow, paved lanes lined by century-old houses carved into the rock. Meghri’s historical and cultural attractions include the 17th-century Meghri Fortress, the 17th-century Surb Astvatsatsin churches of the Great and Small Quarters, and the nearby Meghri Monastery, which dates from the period between the 15th and 18th centuries.
The fortress is located on the northern side of Meghri’s Great Quarter, on hard-to-access mountain peaks. It was completely rebuilt in the 18th century, consists of six towers, and has no surrounding walls. Records already mention it as existing in 1083. In 1723, under the leadership of David Bek, the fortress resisted Turkish attacks.
Nature
The area around the city of Meghri is designated as a site for observing wildlife. Arevik National Park is located near Meghri; it protects a typical montane flora region of Meghri and the Meghri mountain range.
Meghri is known for its fertile gardens; in addition to traditional fruits, persimmons, olives, and kiwis are grown there.
Meghri’s traditional crafts once included goldsmithing, blacksmithing, masonry, tailoring, carpentry, straw weaving, woolwork, cotton and silk textiles, weaving runners and carpets, embroidery, and lacework.
